January 23, 2025 – Fresno Police Department officials report that on Monday, January 20, 2025, at 3:41 p.m., officers from the Northeast Policing District responded to the area of East Cortland Avenue and Ninth Street to conduct a welfare check on 62-year-old Shirla Ramirez, who failed to show up to work. Officers arrived and found Shirla inside the residence, unresponsive. EMS personnel responded to the location, where they pronounced her deceased on scene. Based on her injuries observed by officers, her death appeared to be suspicious in nature, and they requested the Homicide Unit to respond. While on scene, homicide detectives worked with the Fresno County Coroner’s Office and found her injuries to be caused by blunt force trauma and several lacerations to the upper body. Her death was determined to be a homicide.

During their investigation, detectives learned that Shirla resided at the residence alone and had called out from work the Friday prior, claiming family issues. Detectives were able to identify her son, 35-year-old Brad Ramirez, as the person responsible for Shirla’s death. Brad was taken into custody on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, after being discharged from Community Regional Medical Center on an unrelated matter. Detectives are still attempting to determine a motive behind her death and are asking anyone with information to please contact the Fresno Police Department.
