February 13, 2025 – Madera County Sheriff's Office officials release message from Sheriff of Madera County, John Zanoni on California Senate Bill 54 (SB54).

Sheriff John Zanoni and Supervisor Nathan Magsig discuss the need for reform of California’s SB54 law.  Sheriff Zanoni would like Immigration & Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) agents to have access to the county jail and be able to communicate with local law enforcement in order to safely contact criminals inside the jail rather than out in public.

I.C.E. is the only law enforcement agency not allowed to enter secure areas of our jail due to the provisions of SB54.  Sheriff Zanoni believes it is common sense to have these agents contact a person of interest inside a correctional facility rather than to release them and have them potentially commit another crime before I.C.E. can track them down.  This catch and release model poses an extreme danger to law enforcement and innocent bystanders of our community.
