February 18, 2025 – CAL FIRE officials announce that if you smell smoke, it may be the work of one of the CAL FIRE units making California more wildfire resilient.

Here CAL FIRE NEU is burning debris piles. 

Crews first gather woody debris to safely burn when conditions are favorable. Our foresters carefully plan these operations to take the weather, wind, and fuel conditions into account. 

Turn on the “Prescribed Fire” layer on the CAL FIRE Incidents Map to see where controlled burns are planned: fire.ca.gov/incidents.
