March 23, 2025 - The Rural County Representatives of California (RCRC) reports last week, Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) led a group of 31 Senators in a letter that voiced “serious concerns” about the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s cancelation of food purchase programs across the United States. They noted that the cancelation will have harmful impacts on both families and farmers.

In the letter, lawmakers requested the reversal of the cancelation. They highlighted that the $1 billion in cancelled purchases by the USDA comes at a time of high food prices and instability within U.S. agricultural markets, further exacerbating an already painful situation. In California alone, cancelation of purchases through the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program (LFPA) and the Local Food for Schools Cooperative Agreement Program (LFS) puts more than $118 million in food purchases at risk in Fiscal Year 2025.
