July 14, 2025 – Mariposa County Health & Human Services officials issue tips for preventing heat-related illness during the hot days of MHHS heatsummer.

Summer weather has many people out working in the sun and enjoying the outdoors but even when temperatures are moderate, extended exposure can have serious health impacts.

Remember:

▪️ When possible, avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest parts of the day.

▪️ Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.

▪️ Use air conditioning or fans. If you don't have these options, identify places where you can take a break, like the library.

▪️ Take cool showers or baths.

For those in our community whose work is mostly outdoors, make sure to take extra steps to keep yourself safe! Working outdoors or in non-air-conditioned places can become hazardous when as temperatures rise.

Here are some tips to prevent heat-related illness at work:

▪️ Stay hydrated by frequently drinking cool water before you get thirsty

▪️ Wear a hat outdoors and breathable, light-colored, loose-fitting clothes

▪️ Rest in the shade or a cooler place

▪️ If you feel faint or weak, STOP all activity and get to a cool place

Employers of outdoor workers are required by California law to provide workers with water, rest, and shade.
