Drowning Investigation – Cressey Bridge 

August 3, 2025 – Merced County Sheriff's Office officials report that on Thursday, July 31, 2025, in the evening at Merced SO drowningapproximately 6:41 P.M., deputies from the Merced County Sheriff's Office responded to the Cressey Bridge area on the Merced River for a report of a possible drowning. Witnesses on scene reported seeing a man struggling in the water before losing sight of him as he was swept away by the current.

Deputies, Detectives, and the Merced County Sheriff’s Office Dive Rescue and Recovery Team immediately responded and began search and rescue efforts. Multiple assets were deployed including drones, the Sheriff's office Helicopter, and specialized dive equipment.

At approximately 10:44 P.M., the decedent was located by the Dive Team using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) in approximately 15 feet of water. A diver recovered the body, and a Sheriff’s Detective pronounced the subject deceased on scene. The decedent was transported to the Merced County Coroner’s Office for further examination.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

This was a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the individuals and families affected.
