August 5, 2025 - To protect public safety and support critical restoration efforts, the ongoing work from Forest Order No. 05-15-51-25-01 in the Nelder Grove Historic Area within the Sierra National Forest continues to be temporarily closed beginning August 5, 2025, through December 31, 2025.

This closure—Forest Order No. 05-15-51-25-10—is necessary due to post-fire hazards and extensive mechanical and helicopter operations planned throughout the area. These activities are part of an emergency response to restore the grove and protect the remaining Giant Sequoia trees severely impacted by the 2017 Railroad Fire and ongoing drought conditions.

🚧 What’s Closed:

  • • All roads, trails, and recreational sites within the 1,432-acre Nelder Grove Historic Area

⚠️ Why It’s Closed:

  • • Hazardous conditions from fire-damaged trees
  • • Active restoration work involving heavy equipment and helicopters
  • • Protection of sensitive natural resources

✅ Exceptions: Individuals with a valid Forest Permit (Form FS-7700-48) may be granted access only if deemed safe by Forest officials. Additional safety measures may be required.

Forest Service staff have worked closely with stakeholders and permit holders to ensure this decision supports both public safety and long-term forest health. The closure may be lifted earlier if conditions improve.

We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to restore this treasured landscape. For updates and more information, please visit the Sierra National Forest website or contact your local ranger district
