August 21, 2025 – WINTON, CA – Merced County Sheriff's Office officials report that on August 20, 2025, at 11:37 a.m., Animal Merced SO WintonControl Officers were dispatched to Winfield Elementary School for a report of aggressive dogs.

The Animal Control Officers tracked the dogs to a residence in the 6900 block of Chestnut Lane. As the Animal Control Officers approached the residence, we believe four shots were fired at them. Animal Control Officers retreated to safety. Deputies immediately responded to the area, and Winfield Elementary School was placed on lockdown.

The Merced County Sheriff's Office SWAT team was activated and responded to the scene. At this time, no injuries have been reported, and no additional shots have been fired.

At this time, no arrests have been made; however, Investigator’s continue to interview persons of interest. We want to thank our law enforcement partners, the Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, the California Highway Patrol, and CalFire, for their swift response and assistance! We are grateful that our Animal Control Officers and no one else was injured during this incident.
