Rest Area, Lane/Ramp & Full Highway Closures 
Interstate 5 and State Routes 59, 99, 140, & 165 

August 29, 2025 – MERCED COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform various closures on Interstate 5 (I-5), and State Route 59 (SR-59), SR-99, SR-140, & SR-165 for maintenance and construction operations. Work is scheduled to occur as follows:

INTERSTATE 5

  • Full closure of the John C. Erreca Rest Areas on southbound I-5 beginning Monday, April 4, 2022, through September 30, 2025.

o ALTERNATE LOCATIONS: Motorists traveling southbound are advised to use the Coalinga-Avenal Rest Area (Fresno/Kings County line).

STATE ROUTE 59

  • Long-term lane/shoulder closures northbound and southbound 16th Street Bridge for bridge work beginning Monday, February 10 at 8:00 p.m. through Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at 11:00 p.m.
  • Full highway closure on southbound SR-59 from West Olive Avenue/Santa Fe Drive to Cooper Street for utility work beginning Wednesday, September 3, through Friday, September 5, 2025, from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.

STATE ROUTE 99

  • Full on and off-ramp closures on northbound SR-99 at the Applegate Road Over-Crossing for tree work on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

STATE ROUTE 140

  • One-way traffic control from State Route 33 West to Kniebes Road for utility work beginning Wednesday, September 3, through Friday, September 5, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • One-way traffic control at the Los Banos Creek for striping work on Tuesday, September 2, from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and Wednesday, September 3, through Friday, September 5, 2025, from 7:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

STATE ROUTE 165

  • One-way traffic control from Charleston Avenue to Almond Drive for pavement work on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.
  • One-way traffic control from Santa Fe Grade Road to Overland Avenue for pavement work beginning Wednesday, September 3, through Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
  • One-way traffic control from Santa Barbara Street to Scripps Drive for pavement work beginning Thursday, September 4, through Friday, September 5, 2025, from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Motorists should expect 5-10 minute delays and use alternate routes whenever possible.

This work is scheduled to take place as listed, but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment, and/or construction related issues.
