September 17, 2025 – CAL FIRE officials announce the nation’s first Wildfire Prepared Community and shows how to build more wildfire safe homes.

What would a community built to be wildfire prepared look like?

As we recognize National Preparedness Month, State Fire Marshal Daniel Berlant went to Southern California to visit the nation’s first  Wildfire Prepared Community.

A key feature of this community is #Zone0 defensible space—the ember-resistant five-foot buffer around each home. This simple yet powerful step, paired with home hardening improvements like *soffited eaves and double-glazed tempered windows, dramatically increases home survivability.

Preparedness starts at home, and defensible space is the first line of defense in protecting families and entire communities from wildfire.

Learn more about how you can create and enhance your defensible space and home hardening, both individually and at a community level, at ReadyForWildfire.org.
