November 17, 2025 – Merced CHP officials report that last Friday, Officer Mason responded to an abandoned stolen vehicle burn in a rural area of Merced County. Thieves often steal cars to use for other crimes or to strip and abandon them, and the holiday season unfortunately brings an increase in these types of cases.

As holiday shopping picks up, so do vehicle thefts.

Parking lots become crowded this time of year, and criminals look for easy opportunities. Unlocked doors, visible shopping bags, purses, phones, or a vehicle left running can make you a quick target.

We encourage everyone to take a moment before walking away from their car. Lock your vehicle. Activate your alarm system. Keep valuables and shopping bags out of sight and place them in the trunk when possible. Choose well-lit parking areas whenever you can.

If your vehicle is stolen or you experience a break in, report it to law enforcement right away and contact your insurance company. Having your license plate number, VIN, and registration copied and stored somewhere accessible can help speed up the recovery process.

Stay aware, protect your property, and enjoy the holiday season safely.
