November 22, 2025 - Sierra National Forest officials announce the High Sierra Ranger District has received its first winter snowfall of the
season, with several inches blanketing several areas.
Most of the Tamarack area and Red Mountain Road currently have between six to ten inches of snow. While not enough for sledding or snowmobiling, it’s still a beautiful opportunity to visit and experience the SNFs first winter coat.
Please exercise caution when planning to visit the Sno-Parks, as snow depths are still a bit shallow and may not fully cover stumps, logs, or thorny vegetation.
Special thanks to Caltrans. They’ve done an excellent job of clearing Highway 168, including turnouts, and have thoroughly sanded most of the roadway. Please travel safely, drive slowly, and enjoy the SNF responsibly this winter season.
Many forest roads remain open until December 1, some even through December 15, however, visitors will want to come prepared to successfully navigate winter driving conditions and the possibility of downed trees.
Please note, from November 1 through May 30 every year SNO-Park permits are required for every vehicle. More information about SNO-Park permits is available at the following link: https://ohv.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=30735Source and photo: Sierra National Forest
