December 24, 2025 - Clovis, Calif. - The Sierra National Forest (SNF) is pleased to announce that the Nelder Grove of Giant Sequoias will reopen to the public on January 1, 2026, following the expiration of Forest Order 05-15-51-25-06 on December 31, 2025.

The grove was closed for public safety during extensive hand, mechanical, and helicopter treatments and fuels reduction operations, completed December 2025. The treatments covered nearly 700 acres in and around Nelder Grove, reducing wildfire risk by removing dead fuels, small trees, and shrubs near the historic giant sequoias. The project totaled approximately $11.5 million and was authorized under the Giant Sequoia Emergency Response Decision Memorandum signed in July 2022.

While the grove will reopen come the first of the year, seasonal weather conditions may affect accessibility. SNF fire crews will continue pile burning in treated areas, in close coordination with local air quality districts for public safety and minimal smoke impact.

Reopening Nelder Grove reflects Forest Supervisor Gould’s commitment to restoring public access as quickly as possible, even as facility and trail restoration remains ongoing.

The Sierra National Forest appreciates the public’s patience and support during this critical effort to protect one of California’s most treasured giant sequoia groves.
