December 28, 2025 – Merced, CA – Merced CHP officials report that heavy rain is creating slick roadways, reduced visibility, and an increase in spin-outs and traffic collisions across the area. This traffic collision is a reminder of how quickly driving conditions can change when roads are wet. In this case, a big rig driver was unable to prevent the trailer from losing control after heavy braking when traffic slowed ahead in the rain.
When driving in wet weather, small adjustments can make a big difference. Slowing your speed, increasing your following distance, and allowing extra time to reach your destination give you more room to react when conditions aren’t ideal.
Rain changes road conditions, and it should change how we drive. Take it slower, give yourself more space, and plan for the extra time needed to arrive safely.
What’s the first thing you change when driving in heavy rain?
