February 7, 2026 – Merced CHP officials issue a fog safety warning to drivers.
Fog can be deceptive. During daylight hours, headlights set to AUTO may turn on your headlights but not your tail lights. In fog, that means drivers coming up from behind may not see you until they’re dangerously close.
When visibility is reduced, switch your headlights fully ON, not auto, so your tail lights are activated and you’re visible from both directions.
Be honest, how many vehicles did you see today driving in the fog with no tail lights on?
