March 25, 2026 – Merced County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on the morning of March 20, 2026, deputies responded to the intersection of Cypress Road and Reynolds Avenue in Dos Palos, regarding a property dispute. Deputies learned the suspect, 45-year-old John Jones, began an argument with the 68-year-old victim over not being allowed to farm on the victim’s property. During the argument, Jones called the victim racial slurs before grabbing him and pushing him against a vehicle.

Jones threatened to kill the victim, retrieved a handgun from his vehicle, and pointed it at the victim. He antagonized the victim to give him a reason to kill him; however, when the victim did not, Jones left the area. Deputies responded to Jones’ residence to follow up on the incident and placed Jones under arrest. Jones was booked into the Merced County Jail for felony assault with a firearm and committing a hate crime.

A search warrant was served at Jones' residence, and 28 firearms were seized along with the firearm that was used during the altercation. This remains an ongoing investigation.
