May 16, 2026 - WASHINGTON – On Thursday, Senator John Cornyn released the following:
U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) today introduced the Ban Outsiders Openly Touting (BOOT) Sharia Law Act, which would bar aliens who support Sharia Law from entering or remaining in the United States. Video of Senator Cornyn discussing this legislation on the Senate floor can be found here.
“Sharia Law is the antithesis of what our country stands for: freedom of conscience, religion, and speech,” said Sen. Cornyn. “My bill would ensure no alien who supports this hateful ideology is welcome in America, and I’m proud to introduce it.”
Senator Tim Sheehy (R-MT) is a cosponsor of this legislation.
Background:
Specifically, the Ban Outsiders Openly Touting (BOOT) Sharia Law Act would:
- Bar aliens from receiving immigration benefits, like asylum or a green card, if they endorse or advocate for the imposition of Sharia Law;
- Equip the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with additional tools to bar aliens from immigration benefits if they protest the U.S. and its form of government, or support terrorism or terrorist groups in the United States;
- And allow DHS a longer period to revoke green cards and add new bases to terminate green cards when aliens advocate for terrorism or terrorist groups, oppose the U.S. and its form of government, and support individuals or terrorist groups who carried out terrorist attacks on U.S. Armed Forces.
Sen. Cornyn called on the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) last spring to investigate the East Plano Islamic Center’s (EPIC) planned Muslim community, EPIC Ranches City, in Josephine, Texas, in light of potential religious discrimination against Christians, Jews, and other non-Muslim minorities. This legislation builds on these efforts as well as the No Sharia Act, which Sen. Cornyn cosponsored. The No Sharia Act would prohibit courts from enforcing judgments, decrees, or contracts relying on foreign laws that violate the Constitution.
Sen. Cornyn has repeatedly condemned Sharia Law and is actively working to prohibit its implementation in Texas and across the country.
