Fresno Police Officer Shot, Hurt During Domestic Disturbance Call, Suspect Arrested
May 18, 2026 – Fresno Police Department officials report that on May 16, 2026, at 6:28 P.M., officers responded to a confidential location near East Garrett Avenue and South Clara Avenue regarding a domestic disturbance. 56-year-old Paul Rodriguez Cisneros was determined to be the suspect in the domestic violence investigation and was wanted for domestic violence charges including assault with a deadly weapon with a vehicle, and criminal threats. Officers confirmed Cisneros was also in possession of an unknown caliber handgun.
On May 16, 2026, at approximately 9:23 P.M., uniformed officers attempted to make contact at the confidential location in attempt to locate and arrest Cisneros for the domestic violence charges. Uniformed officers were immediately met with gunfire as they exited their patrol vehicle.
One officer was struck with gunfire; the second officer was unharmed. The injured officer was struck several times in his arm and upper body and was transported to CRMC for medical treatment.
The investigation continued throughout the night and into the morning. Officers received information that suspect Cisneros was in a residence in the area of Bardell Avenue and Vine Avenue.
SWAT team deployed and responded to the location. As SWAT approached the residence, they heard multiple shots inside. SWAT evacuated nearby residences and Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT) members attempted negotiations with Cisneros; however, Cisneros did not respond.
SWAT forced entry into the location and located Cisneros in the garage with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Cisneros was transported to CRMC for medical treatment where he is currently listed in critical condition and in custody for the outstanding charges. The neighborhood has been rendered safe. Please be aware that detectives and officers will be in the area, completing the investigation and processing the scene throughout the night.
