A year after Trump’s reckless, indiscriminate raids, Los Angeles and California Democrats have delivered laws and solutions that will keep ICE out of our schools, hospitals, vote centers and day cares, and empower state law enforcement to investigate ICE.
June 7, 2026 - SACRAMENTO — One year ago on Saturday, Trump unleashed an unprecedented ICE raid on Los
Angeles. This was not targeted enforcement against violent criminals. It was a deliberate campaign of harassment and terror: ICE agents descending on workers, families and business owners, sowing chaos and fear in immigrant communities and communities of color across Los Angeles.
Since that day, Speaker Robert Rivas and Assembly Democrats have sent a clear message to the White House: Not in California.
A year later, Los Angeles and California Democrats are leading the nation in holding Trump and ICE accountable, passing and advancing legislation that keeps ICE out of our schools, hospitals, vote centers and day cares; empowers state law enforcement to investigate ICE killings, and mandates that Border Patrol and Homeland Security officers show their ID and badges.
Just last week, Assembly Democrats voted to pass 22 new bills that hold ICE agents accountable for violence and chaos, and reject Trump’s failed immigration policies.
And California will never back down.
Read the following statements from Assembly Democrats: an unwavering commitment to upholding the law and protecting California’s immigrants:
“Trump sent his ICE agents to Los Angeles not to stop crime, not to protect anyone — but to harass and intimidate. They came for the chefs and vendors, the construction workers, the grandmother walking her grandkids to school. California has always rejected this — and we will never back down.”
—Speaker of the Assembly Robert Rivas
“One year later, the fear and uncertainty caused by the Trump Administration’s immigration enforcement actions continue to impact families across California. As enforcement intensifies and policies shift, many immigrants are left wondering whether it is safe to go to work, take their children to school, seek medical care, or return home to their loved ones. Every person deserves dignity and due process under the law. Immigrants are essential to California’s communities, economy, and culture, and our state remains committed to protecting their rights. California will continue to strengthen safeguards, expand support, and ensure immigrant families can access the services and opportunities they need to live, work, and thrive.”
—Assemblymember Juan Carrillo, Vice-Chair of the Latino Caucus
“One year into Trump’s war on immigrants, courts have ruled that 90% of ICE detentions were illegal—that’s 10,000 lives turned upside down. This was never about ‘going after criminals’; it’s about Trump’s need for power. In California, we will keep fighting and winning.”
—Assemblymember Liz Ortega, Vice Chair of the Latino Caucus
“One year ago, the Los Angeles County Legislative Delegation stood unified with a message for the Trump administration and their illegal deployment of ICE agents in Los Angeles — This federal government? They not like us. A year later, L.A. continues to be strong, diverse and resilient. Our resilience is our strength and we will not be intimidated by anyone threatening our peace.”
—Assemblymember Tina McKinnor, Chair of the Los Angeles County Legislative Delegation
“It has been one year since ICE began its reign of terror against immigrant communities across Los Angeles and our nation. Since then, families have lived in fear, parents have worried about their children and loved ones, and small businesses have struggled under the weight of uncertainty and intimidation. That is why I am proud to work alongside my community to author AB 1650, the Slam the Brakes on ICE Act. This bill sends a clear message: ICE should not operate from the shadows. If a government agency is carrying out enforcement actions in our neighborhoods, the vehicles they use should be clearly marked, identifiable, and accountable to the public. Transparency builds trust, and Californians deserve both. No one should have to fear an unmarked vehicle in their own neighborhood.”
—Assemblymember Jessica Caloza
“One year later, the consequences of the Trump Administration's immigration raids are still being felt across South Central Los Angeles. These actions have spread fear, torn families apart, and contributed to the loss of lives in immigrant communities, while undermining the safety and stability our neighborhoods deserve. We reject the politics of fear and remain committed to protecting immigrant families and building communities rooted in dignity, justice, and opportunity.”
—Assemblymember Sade Elhawary
“One year ago, a wave of militarized secret police rushed our streets, kidnapped our neighbors, and locked our tios and tias away. We have not recovered. We are not whole. Our families, our children, our loved ones are still missing. And as this tyrant in the White House pretends all is fine and California Republicans are saying ICE agents are 'just doing their jobs' — it’s more than frustrating, it's barbaric. We are fighting, not because we want to, but because we have to. We will not roll over and play nice when ICE kidnaps children and uses them as bait. When innocent civilian protesters were SHOT in cold blood. Immigrants are Californians, and our state protects its people by taking bold actions. Don't tread on us.”
—Assemblymember Mark González
“One year ago, I witnessed firsthand the fear and uncertainty that federal immigration enforcement actions brought to Paramount and communities across Los Angeles County. Families were traumatized, children feared losing their parents, and entire neighborhoods felt targeted. California has spent the past year fighting to protect immigrant communities and hold federal agencies accountable. We will not stop defending the hardworking families who are the backbone of our state. No en mi distrito.”
