July 12, 2026 - Sacramento, CA – California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., issued the following statement in response to the abrupt firing of three members of the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) - the nation’s only bipartisan federal agency dedicated to helping election officials improve the administration of elections and expand voter access for Americans.
“Weakening the bipartisan Election Assistance Commission is reckless, coming at a time when its safeguards are needed most. The EAC has long served as a trusted partner to states, however, the current federal administration continues its unprecedented attack on how elections are administered in favor of its own interests. This move is not about improving elections, it is injecting unnecessary chaos, confusion and instability into the very systems that Americans rely on to make their voices heard. I want to extend my sincerest gratitude to those who have served on the commission and whose important work will continue to have a lasting impact. Let me be equally clear: California will not be intimidated or deterred. Whether you are casting a ballot, running for office, or serving as an election worker, it is absolutely vital that we stand by our democratic principles and maintain elections in which everyone can fairly and securely participate.”
