Juvenile Drowns in Merced River 

July 14, 2026 – Merced County Sheriff's Office officials report that on July 11, 2026, at 7:30 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a drowning at the Merced River near the Cressey Bridge. Deputies learned that a 13-year-old juvenile was swimming with family when he began struggling in the swift-moving current and was swept away. Witnesses reported seeing the juvenile go underwater, and he did not resurface. Merced Sheriff's Sable 6 helicopter immediately began searching the area while our Dive Rescue and Recovery Team responded. Using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), our dive team located the juvenile at a depth of approximately 18 feet. Divers recovered the juvenile, who was pronounced deceased and transported to the Merced County Coroner's Office for further examination.

Out of respect for the family and due to the juvenile's age, his identity will not be released.

This heartbreaking incident serves as another tragic reminder that the Merced River can be extremely dangerous. At the end of July last year, an adult male drowned in this same area under nearly identical circumstances after struggling in the current and failing to resurface. Just days ago, on July 7, 2026, our deputies and Merced Sheriff's Sable 5 helicopter safely rescued four people from the Merced River near Snelling Park after their raft became stuck on an object in the river.

Many of these incidents are preventable. We urge everyone planning to enjoy our waterways to make safety their top priority:

- Don't enter the water if you do not know how to swim.

- Always wear a properly fitted life jacket.

- Never underestimate the strength, speed, or temperature of moving water.

- Stay alert to submerged hazards, changing currents, and debris.

- Never swim or enter the river alone.

- Check river and weather conditions before heading out.

- Keep children within arm's reach and under constant supervision.

- Have a plan for emergencies and call 9-1-1 immediately if someone is in distress.

- Avoid alcohol or drugs while swimming or boating, as they significantly increase the risk of drowning.

This incident remains an active investigation. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the family, friends, and loved ones of this young victim during this incredibly difficult time.
