July 31, 2026 - SONORA, Calif. - Peace officers with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit (TCU) have determined the causes of four of the five fires that occurred throughout Tuolumne and Calaveras counties on July 26, 2026 and July 27, 2026.

Calaveras County

Mitchell Fire - The Mitchell Fire. located near Mitchell Mill Road and Blue Mountain Road in Wilseyville was reported on July 27 at approximately 9:00 a.m. The fire was determined to have been caused by equipment use and burned approximately 0.34 acres.

Cement Fire - The Cement Fire, located near Pool Station Road and Cement Plant Road in San Andreas was reported on July 27 at approximately 11:27 a.m. The fire was determined to have been caused by a vehicle and burned approximately 7.71 acres.

Tuolumne County

Dove Fire - The Dove Fire, located near Highway 108 and West Stockton Road in Sonora was reported on July 26 at approximately 2:51 p.m. The cause was determined to be Recklessly Causing a Fire and burned 223 acres.

Court Fire - The Court Fire, located near Sanguinetti Road and Highway 108 in Sonora was reported on July 27 at approximately 2:48 p.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The fire burned approximately 12 acres.

O'Neil Fire - The O'Neil Fire, located near Mormon Creek Road and Rim Rock Road in Jamestown was reported on July 27 at approximately 7:11 p.m. The fire was determined to have been caused by spontaneous combustion and burned approximately 3 acres.

Approximately 95% of wildfires in California are caused by people.
