October 2, 2026 – Merced Irrigation District (MID) has elected to enter a predevelopment agreement with Legacy Realty & Development, LLC (Legacy) of Fresno, to explore and evaluate future opportunities at Lake Yosemite.

During the one-year process, Legacy will conduct financial, technical, operational, market and planning evaluations. Ultimately, Legacy will provide MID with a comprehensive package for the district to evaluate future opportunities and possible long-term agreements between the two entities.

“Lake Yosemite is a vital component of MID’s water infrastructure. The MID land adjacent to the lake has the potential to be a spectacular recreation destination for area residents and visitors,” said MID General Manager John Sweigard. “This predevelopment process will help us better identify what opportunities may exist, what is feasible, and how Lake Yosemite can continue to serve the District’s water needs and allow for recreation and tourism over the long term.”

Bill Cummings, CEO of Legacy Realty & Development, said Legacy views this agreement as an opportunity to think boldly and responsibly about the future of Lake Yosemite.

“We’re excited to be working with Merced Irrigation District,” he said. “As a Central Valley company, we understand the importance of creating places that serve the community and remain valuable for generations to come.”

In early 2026, MID assumed management of recreational activities at Lake Yosemite after a long-term agreement between MID and Merced County expired. Since then, MID Parks staff have worked to enhance day-to-day operations, including increased maintenance and graffiti abatement. Recreation opportunities have been expanded to include paddleboard rentals and an ice-cream vendor.

“Our park visitors and staff are excited about the improvements already taking place at Lake Yosemite, and this agreement represents another important step forward,” said MID Parks Director Brooke Gutierrez. “Over the next year, we will have an opportunity to evaluate a wide range of ideas and better understand what opportunities may provide the greatest benefit to MID, park visitors and the local community.”

The agreement with Legacy does not authorize construction, physical development, or approve any specific project at Lake Yosemite.

Any future proposal resulting from the predevelopment process would require separate review and approval by the MID Board of Directors before implementation.

MID Parks has integrated Lake Yosemite facility rentals, day-use permits and annual passes into its existing parks program. For information about current recreation at the lake, please visit: www.lakemcclure.com/lake-yosemite/
