October 7, 2026 - Sierra National Forest officials say applying heavily coordinated post storm recovery efforts, the Forest (SNF) has successfully reopened and maintained more than 1,550 miles of roads across the Forest since 2023.

Forest Service engineering staff and contractors have restored full access to 167 miles of maintenance level 4 routes (ML4, passenger-vehicle, comfort/paved), restored major functionality on 195 miles of maintenance level 3 routes (ML3, low-clearance passenger vehicle), and improved travel safety across 1,197 miles of maintenance level 2 roads (ML2, all traffic, high-clearance, 4x4) that are critical for community access, forest management operations, and emergency response.
Additional maintenance repair work will take place on Forest Service Roads 6S25 and 6S76 in the Mammoth Pool area. The scheduled work is expected to last from mid-October through the first week of November, making the roads safer and more accessible for everyone.
BRUSHING WORK:
October 19–23
During brush work travelers may experience minimal traffic delays, maximum 30 minutes.
ASPHALT RESURFACING:
October 26–November 6
Phase 2 will follow a strict construction schedule, however the road will remain open early mornings, the noon hour, and after hours:
- Open: 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
- Open: 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.
Visitors may expect heavy equipment and road crews working along these roads for the duration of the project.
