October 27, 2026 - Long Beach, CA — On Monday, Rep. Robert Garcia, Ranking Member of the House Committee ice graphic1125.5on Oversight and Government Reform, demanded answers from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Acting Director after ICE agents brutally attacked and injured a North Long Beach resident and U.S. citizen. Ranking Member Garcia was Mayor of Long Beach for eight years.

“The horrific footage of ICE agents assaulting a North Long Beach resident is deeply disturbing and should alarm every American. Donald Trump’s cruel and unlawful deportation agenda is putting lives at risk, and we must do everything in our power to stop it. Long Beach stands with our immigrant families, and we will not allow ICE to terrorize our communities. We have lots of questions, and we won’t stop until there’s accountability for this violence,” said Ranking Member Robert Garcia.

In the letter, Ranking Member Garcia writes, “I write to demand answers about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) violent detention of Ricardo Gonzalez, a U.S. citizen, father, and former city employee in Long Beach, California, on Saturday, October 17, 2026. Mr. Gonzalez is a constituent of Congresswoman Nanette Barragán, who has led the call for a comprehensive Inspector General investigation into his treatment. Available videos show an unmarked ICE vehicle veering towards Mr. Gonzalez while he was riding his e-bike, an officer pulling him to the ground, and three officers forcibly restraining him face down on the curb of the road while he cried out in pain. Predictably, the Trump Administration immediately defended the officers responsible for excessive violence and blamed the victim before any investigation has even been conducted. As I investigate ICE’s brutal and dangerous actions on American streets, I demand records and information about this horrific incident and call for accountability for the officials involved.”

In October 2026, Congressman Robert Garcia conducted an unannounced oversight visit to the Adelanto Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Processing Center to inspect conditions at one of the largest immigration detention facilities in the country.

In July 2026, Congressman Robert Garcia demanded of answers from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) regarding the vetting and training of ICE officers in the wake of the killing of Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero on July 13, 2026, in Biddeford, Maine.

In May 2026, Ranking Member Garcia held an immigration round table in Orlando, and visited an Orlando ICE facility with Congressman Maxwell Frost.

In February 2026, Ranking Member Garcia released a report highlighting Oversight Democrats’ key findings regarding the killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti by federal immigration enforcement agents in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Both victims were killed while bearing witness to the abuses and injustices on their neighbors by the Trump Administration’s aggressive, violent, and unlawful immigration enforcement tactics.

In December 2025, Ranking Member Garcia and Ranking Member Richard Blumenthal launched a series of bicameral hearings to expose and investigate abuses, excessive force, and constitutional violations by federal immigration enforcement agents.

In November 2025, Ranking Member Garcia led Oversight Democrats in launching a public Immigration Enforcement Dashboard to track and document incidents of abuse and potential misconduct by DHS immigration enforcement agents across the country.
