November 4, 2026 - San Francisco – Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement after Democrats won
the House majority, paving the way for Hakeem Jeffries to be the next Speaker of the House:
“Tonight, the American people have changed the course of our country. By electing a Democratic House majority, they have broken Washington’s Republican monopoly on power and restored a constitutional check on a President who has governed as though none should exist. They have demanded lower costs, better healthcare and a government that fights for working families.
“With tremendous personal pride, I congratulate our next Speaker, Hakeem Jeffries. Exactly twenty years after I became the first woman to hold the gavel, he will make history as the first Black Speaker of the House. I know the strength, judgment and resolve that office demands. Hakeem has those qualities in abundance. He has led Democrats to this extraordinary victory, and he will be a magnificent Speaker.
“To our outstanding candidates and tireless grassroots volunteers: you refused to surrender our country’s future, and you have secured the power to change it. Now, we must honor that victory by lowering costs, defending Social Security and Medicare, protecting our freedoms and holding this Administration accountable. The American people have rendered their verdict. The People’s House will carry it out.”
