P-40-aircraft

October 3, 2014 - Noted speaker and adventurer, Tony Krizan, will reveal in photos the tragic event of October 24, 1941 when a squadron of 19 Curtis Wright P40 fighter aircraft were on a training mission from March Air Force Base in Riverside to McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento.  Thunder storms and poor decisions caused five aircraft to crash in the Sierra Mountains east of the San Joaquin Valley.  Crash sites were photographed in 2010 and 2012.  Four aircraft have been located but the whereabouts of one P40 is still a mystery, even after 72 years. Tony will be joined by Kent Lenz, an expert in salvaging and restoring P-40s to flying condition.

Mariposa County Airport is 4 miles north of town on Rt 49 N. The event is hosted by the Mariposa chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (209-742-5135).

This is one of the many local events  honoring President Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the Yosemite Grant Act on June 30, 1864, which protected Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of Big Trees for all time.

After the presentation, autographed copies of Tony’s two books on hiking these historic Forgotten Trails of Yosemite will be available.
