The sculpture design, which was selected by the official American Indian Alaska Native Veterans Memorial Committee, was created by renowned sculptor A. Thomas Schomberg and titled “The Gift.” The planned memorial will feature a 12-foot-tall bronze sculpture standing atop a 10-foot pedestal and will reside at the Riverside National Cemetery in southern California.
The model has been on exhibit at locations throughout California in an effort to pay tribute to the dedication and sacrifice of American Indian and Alaska Native veterans and to raise awareness about their long history of service to our nation. American Indian and Alaska Native Veterans have served in the U.S. Armed Forces at higher rates than any other ethnic group.
A reception is being planned for Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017. November is also national Native American Heritage Month.
Members of the public are invited to come by and see this beautiful statue. It will be on display through Nov. 8 at the California Department of Veterans Affairs Headquarters, Medal of Honor Hall, 1227 O Street, Sacramento, CA 95814.
