MLJC LogoTu B'Shvat Services

The Mother Lode Jewish Community is celebrating Tu B'Shvat (Jewish Arbor Day) on Sunday, February 11th.  Tu B'Shvat, also known as the “New Year for Trees” is considered the Jewish Arbor Day.  Here, in our Mother Lode communities, we are surrounded by an amazing variety of trees and plants and celebrate this uniquely Jewish holiday mindful that we are stewards of the earth and its produce.  Rabbi Andra Greenwald will conduct a Seder service, then those gathered will enjoy a potluck meal and plant a few trees.  This will be an informal, festive gathering, taking place at a member’s home in Murphys.  The Seder is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. followed by lunch at noon and tree planting at 1:00 p.m.

The MLJC will have a number of events in late February & March: a Hamentashen Baking gathering on Wednesday, February 28th from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., our annual Purim Party (with an out of this world theme), scheduled for Saturday, March 3rd that will also be in Murphys, and a Passover Seder scheduled for Saturday, March 31st in Sonora.  There will also be several prep gatherings tied to the Passover event.

For more information about any of these gatherings or to register, call (209) 533-1650, email motherlodejc@yahoo.com or check out our website at MotherLodeJewishCommunity.org.  There is no charge for the Tu B'Shvat, Hamentashen or Purim events.

The MLJC’s mission is to provide opportunities and events that nurture a vibrant and enduring Jewish identity, culture and community in the Mother Lode, drawing its members from Amador, Calaveras, Mariposa and Tuolumne counties.  New members and guests are welcome.
