February 5, 2018 - Children and adults, alike, are invited to make, create, design and explore at the Mariposa Library’s Green S.T.E.A.M. Makerspace on the first and third Thursday of every month. The programs will take place from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Library community room. There is no charge to attend and registration is not required (except where indicated). Children aged eight and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Each week will feature a different craft, science experiment or other hands-on activity related to the overall Green S.T.E.A.M. theme of sustainability. The focus will be on repurposing used materials, using non-toxic ingredients and finding new, less wasteful, more environmentally friendly ways of living, touching on all components of S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, art, math).

During the first program on Thursday, February 8, older participants will create unusual valentines from used books that are at the end of their shelf life, while younger children will paint 3D printed heart-shaped keepsake boxes or make necklaces or keychains from 3D print PLA (plant-based) plastic scrap.

What better way to learn how paper is recycled than by doing it? Participants in the Thursday, February 22 workshop will not only go home with a colorful piece of paper that is uniquely theirs, but also with a better understanding of the how and why of conserving natural resources.

Upcoming programs include:

  • Thursday, March 1—Starting seeds
  • Thursday, March 15—3D printing (tentative, subject to change)
  • Thursday, April 5—video case treasure boxes
  • Thursday, April 19—Earth Day statement buttons

For more information call the Library, (209) 966-2140 or email karen.dusek@mariposalibrary.org.
