April 11, 2018 - On April 9, thanks to the Mariposa County Arts Council, Sierra Foothill Charter School held a special assembly for its third through eighth grade students. Dr. Thomas Ashworth, an internationally renowned trombonist visiting the area to perform in the Mariposa Symphony Orchestra Spring Concert, stopped by to lecture and perform for students. Dr. Ashworth shared the parts of a trombone, how it makes different sounds, how to recognize the difference between major and minor keys, and the art of improvisation in jazz. He shared about his journey as a musician, the importance of practice, and his efforts to continually improve his craft. The students were engaged and full of questions. He played various pieces ranging from Schumann to Coltrane throughout the assembly.
