June 20, 2018 - SACRAMENTO – Secretary of State Alex Padilla issued the following statement after a federal judge struck down Kansas' restrictive voter registration law championed by Kris Kobach.

“This ruling is a major victory for our democracy and a clear rejection of Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach’s repeated efforts to disenfranchise American citizens. The striking rebuke of Kobach’s voter suppression agenda, by a Republican-appointed judge, found that Kansas’ laws violated both the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) and the United States Constitution. Despite the drumbeat of false information from the Trump Administration and Mr. Kobach about ‘massive voter fraud’, it is clear that Kobach and company are the true frauds.

“As California’s chief election official, it will continue to be my mission to ensure that the struggle for equal voting rights—which has spanned generations—will survive these unconscionable attempts to restrict our ability to cast a ballot.”
