June 28, 2015 - At about 4:30 P.M. on Saturday afternoon, June 27, 2015 the Sheriff’s Office was notified of a boating accident at Bass Lake near Miller’s Landing. Madera County Sheriff Deputies‬ assigned to the Boat Patrol unit were the first to arrive at the scene of the accident. The deputies found that a 13 year old boy and a 16 year old girl had been struck by a jet ski. A preliminary investigation has revealed that the children were in the water behind the pontoon boat the family was using when they were struck. The proper flagging was apparently being displayed by the operator of the boat to warn others in the area that there were people in the water.

Several trained medical personnel were in the area when the accident occurred and immediately began rendering aid to the two children. Despite their efforts, the 13 year old boy was pronounced deceased at the scene. The 16 year old girl was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno with serious head injuries.

The operator of the jet ski was questioned by detectives at the scene but was not arrested.

Alcohol does not seem to be a factor in the accident.

The investigation will continue to determine if criminal negligence was a factor in the collision.
