California is required to issue a minimum of 10 percent of its yearly share of federal funds received through the National Park Service (NPS) Historic Preservation Fund Grants Program to local governments whose preservation programs are certified by the NPS. The 2015-2016 Certified Local Government Grants (CLG) will be awarded to the cities of Eureka, Los Angeles, Palo Alto, Riverside and San Diego.
Below is information on the grants:
- Eureka, $25,000. The city will prepare a strategic plan for the Blue Ox Historic Village and School. The Blue Ox School teaches the traditional arts of logging, metalworking, millwork, and other crafts that are part of the 19th and 20th century legacy of the north coast. The school has focused on high school students and returning veterans looking for meaningful occupations.
- Los Angeles, $35,000. The Los Angeles Office of Historic Resources will develop a historic context associated with the themes and resources associated with the city’s Jewish community. This context will contribute to SurveyLA’s citywide historic context statement.
- Palo Alto, $37,000. The city will prepare architectural design guidelines tailored to the Professorville Historic District, a property listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The guidelines will expedite the review of proposed changes to the residences within the district.
- Riverside, $40,000. The city will prepare a historic context statement associated with the themes and resources associated with the city’s Chinese American history. The project will include oral histories and an educational podcast.
- San Diego, $30,000. The city will prepare a historic context statement addressing the themes and resources significant to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community. San Diego has a long association with the gay rights movement, and is home to many advocacy and support groups.
California’s Certified Local Government Grants are awarded on a competitive basis and require a 40 percent local government match that can be provided using a combination of public funds, private funds, and allowable in-kind donations.
