July 21, 2022 - The National Weather Service Hanford Office reports a  Heat Advisory is in effect for the San Joaquin Valley, lower Sierra foothills, and Kern River Valley from 12:00 P.M. this afternoon until 11:00 P.M. this evening.

Heat sensitive people and those who are new to the area will be most prone to heat illnesses.

Dehydration and prolonged exposure or strenuous physical activity outdoors could lead to heat exhaustion and/or heat stroke.

If you have to be outside, apply sunscreen, stay hydrated, and wear light colored, loose fitting clothing.

.SYNOPSIS...
Widespread triple digit heat is expected in the San Joaquin Valley
this afternoon. Maximum temperatures across Central California
Friday afternoon and Saturday afternoon will be two to four
degrees lower than this afternoon. Triple digit heat is likely in
most of the San Joaquin Valley each afternoon Sunday through 
Wednesday. Dry weather will persist for the next several days.

.DISCUSSION...
An anticyclone aloft will be centered over the Desert Southwest
today through Friday. Widespread triple digit heat is anticipated
in the San Joaquin Valley this afternoon. A Heat Advisory is in
effect for the San Joaquin Valley, lower Sierra foothills, and
Kern River Valley from 12 PM PDT this afternoon until 11 PM PDT
this evening. Here are probabilities of maximum temperatures of 
102 degrees or higher for select locations in the San Joaquin 
Valley on Thursday, July 21st, 2022:

Fresno - 80%
Lemoore - 80%
Hanford - 79%
Visalia - 70%
Delano - 70%
Bakersfield - 69%
Merced - 69%
Madera - 69%
Reedley - 66%
Porterville - 62%

A trough of low pressure will move eastward over Northern
California Friday night into Saturday. This should tighten the
surface pressure gradient, which would lead to locally, strong
gusty winds in the Kern County mountains and desert Saturday
afternoon. Be that as it may, wind gusts should remain below Wind
Advisory criteria Saturday afternoon. The aforementioned
anticyclone aloft will weaken as it shifts eastward late this
weekend into early next week. An upper-level area of high pressure
may develop over Northern Nevada Wednesday. Triple digit heat is
likely in the majority of the San Joaquin Valley each afternoon
Saturday through Wednesday.

VFR conditions will prevail throughout Central California for at
least the next 24 hours.

.AIR QUALITY ISSUES...
On Thursday, July 21st, 2022, unhealthy for sensitive groups in 
Fresno, Kern, and Tulare Counties, as well as in Sequoia National
Park and Forest.
