August 29, 2022 - On August 27, 2022, shortly before 4:30 P.M., the Madera County Sheriff’s Emergency Communications Center received a call for a female suffering from a medical emergency at Bass Lake.

An 81-year-old female was swimming with her husband in Bass Lake near a private dock just off of Blue Jay Point. The female became fatigued from swimming and began experiencing trouble breathing. Prior to the call, she lost consciousness. According to witnesses, water went over her head and face as rescue attempts were made.

Boat deputies were dispatched to the beach near the 39000 block of Blue Jay Point where the victim had been brought to shore. Within minutes of the call, deputies arrived on scene and took over life saving measures that were in progress by good Samaritans. EMS and CAL FIRE arrived shortly after and continued lifesaving efforts. Unfortunately, she was ultimately pronounced deceased at the scene.

The victim has been identified as 81-year-old Claudia Libenson of Bass Lake. An official cause of death is not available at this time.

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Mrs. Libenson as they mourn their loss.
