Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Hanford CA
210 AM PDT Mon Sep 5 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
Excessive Heat Warning until Thursday night due to dangerous
record-breaking heat. Afternoon thunderstorms today in Kern
County and the Sierra Nevada. A chance of thunderstorms each day
this week in the Sierra, with more widespread showers and much
cooler temperatures by Saturday. and Sunday.

.DISCUSSION...
Large area of high pressure aloft currently centered over NV/UT
will remain nearly stationary through Thursday. A couple of
features we will be watching by the end of the week, will be a
long wave trough moving across the nrn tier of the US that will
weaken the ridge from the north. We will also be keeping our eyes
on the tropics in the ERN PAC. Ensembles are advertising a
significant surge of moisture in association with a potential
tropical system moving north through Baja California by Thursday.

The timing and intensity of these features will remain uncertain
until we have a better idea on the position of the tropical system
and the timing of the cool trough across the nrn US. There is
still a lot of things that have to come together before we see a
significant cooldown and possibly wet pattern by the weekend.

Until the weekend, we will have to endure near record breaking
high temperatures at least through Thursday. Excessive Heat
Warning is out through Thursday. We have been seeing debris clouds
from the convection across the Sierra in the afternoon and this
pattern could have a small cooling impact on temperatures in the
Sierra and possibly into the foothills.

So now we will discuss the potential tropical system impacting the
SOCAL region by Saturday. The ensemble guidance is developing a
tropical feature off the west coast of Mexico on Tuesday and then
drift north to just off the tip of Baja by Wednesday night. We
will be watching the NHC statements and forecast tracks very
closely later this week to see how the system is developing and
the forecast track impacting increased moisture over the region.

In the meantime make every effort to stay safe and hydrated.

.AVIATION....
VFR conditions will prevail in Central California through at least
the next 24 hours. Thunderstorms will be present along the Sierra
Crest and the Kern County Mountains and Desert.
