September 21, 2022 - Five new large fires were reported yesterday, one in Kansas, Montana, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington. Ninety-seven large fires and complexes have burned 902,581 acres in 8 states. More than 11,000 wildland firefighter and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the country.
The majority of the current wildfires are in Idaho where 38 large fires are burning. Montana has 28 large fires and complexes and there are 14 large fires in Washington and 6 in Oregon.
Dry and windy conditions are expected in Wyoming and parts of Oregon and Washington today. The southern Plains and southeastern states will be very hot and dry. An upper low is forecast to track northeast from northern California into eastern Oregon and Idaho today. Numerous to widespread showers are expected across much of northern California through Oregon into Washington and across Idaho into western and central Montana. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will be embedded within and ahead of the showers, and the highest rainfall amounts are likely to be from the Oregon Cascades to the central mountains of Idaho and southwest Montana. Additionally, scattered to numerous wet thunderstorms are expected across Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Colorado into Wyoming, with the heaviest rain and potential flooding likely in western Colorado. Strong to severe thunderstorms are likely across the eastern Great Lakes into the Northeast as well. Lingering dry and breezy conditions are likely in portions of southern and eastern Nevada and eastern Washington. Hot and dry conditions, including relative humidity below 25% in some areas, is likely across the Southeast and southern Plains.
