September 26, 2022 - Currently, 89 large fires and complexes have burned 898,732 acres in seven states. Most of the large fires are in Idaho, Montana and the Northwest area. About 8,900 wildland firefighters credit nifcfirefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents. Three Type 1 incident management teams (IMTs), five Type 2 IMTs and one complex IMT are supporting incidents. 

To date, 52,708 wildfires have burned 6,850,045 acres in the United States. More than 87% of these wildfires were human-caused and could have been prevented. People have caused 45,952 wildfires this year that burned 2,936,591 acres. Lightning ignited 6,774 wildfires and burned 3,913,500 acres. The states with the most human-caused wildfires include Texas, California, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

Weather

Upper ridging will remain over the West today with temperatures 10- 15oF above normal with minimum relative humidity of 6-25%, but winds will remain light. A cold front will move off the Gulf and East Coasts today with locally breezy winds and very dry conditions behind the front. North to northwest post-frontal winds of 10-15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph will develop from the Mid and Lower Mississippi Valleys eastward to Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia. Afternoon relative humidity will drop to 12-30%, lowest in the Mid-Mississippi to Tennessee Valleys. Widespread showers with isolated thunderstorms are expected across the Great Lakes and Northeast. Scattered thunderstorms will develop over the Florida Peninsula this afternoon and westward along the immediate Gulf Coast into Texas. Isolated wet thunderstorms are likely over the higher terrain of New Mexico and eastern Arizona as well.
