October 21, 2022 - Five new large fires were reported, one each in Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Montana and Tennessee. Thirty large fires have burned 534,352 acres in 10 states. One Type 1 incident firefighters credit nifcmanagement team (IMT) and four Type 2 IMTs are supporting large fires in the Northwest and Northern California areas.

Critical weather conditions are likely today in parts of Montana, Wyoming and the High Plains. Visit the Predictive Services website for more information about current weather conditions and listen to the weekly fuels and fire danger podcast

Each year, our public lands are used to sight in rifles for hunting season. Target practice is fun but has the potential to cause a devastating wildfire. If you are planning to shoot on public lands, please take these precautions: check weather conditions before you go, do not shoot into rocks or metal objects, place targets in areas free of vegetation, do not use tracer rounds or exploding targets, and bring water, a shovel and a fire extinguisher. Wildfires affect everyone and can take a generation or longer for the rangelands to recover.

Weather

A deep upper trough will move into the Pacific Northwest today with an associated cold front pushing into northern California, northern Nevada, southeast Idaho, and northern Wyoming tonight. Breezy west winds of 15-30 mph with gusts 25-45 mph amid relative humidity of 10-25% ahead of the front will bring elevated conditions in the afternoon from southeast Oregon and the northern Great Basin through Wyoming, northern Colorado, and into the central High Plains. The most critical winds and relative humidity are likely across portions of southern Wyoming. Rain, with mountain snow, will develop behind the cold front during the day in the Northwest, and spread into the northern Great Basin and northern Rockies overnight. Breezy south to southwest winds of 12-20 mph with gusts 20-30 mph amid relative humidity of 15-30% creating locally elevated conditions are likely from north Texas through central and eastern Oklahoma and into eastern Kansas and Missouri. Low afternoon relative humidity of 8-20% is likely over the High Plains of eastern Colorado, northeast New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, and western Kansas, but winds will be light. Low afternoon relative humidity will continue across the Southeast from north Florida through Georgia and into the Carolinas.
