December 21, 2022 - The Fresno County Sheriff's Office reports around 12:00 am, on Saturday, December 18th, Fresno County Sheriff’s dispatchers received a call regarding a man suffering from a fcsd1221gunshot wound. Deputies responded to N. Cornelia Ave., between Belmont and Olive in Fresno. Deputies arrived and discovered friends had already transported the victim to Community Regional Medical Center. The man, 24 year old David Clay of Clovis, later died as a result of his injuries.

Homicide detectives responded and began an investigation. They visited multiple locations in the area of Cornelia and Olive Avenues to interview witnesses. They learned the shooting occurred inside of a vehicle in this area. David Clay was driving and had a passenger riding in the backseat who was identified as 24 year old Javier McCoy of Fresno. Mr. Clay had a loaded handgun in his possession. He gave it to Mr. McCoy and while handling it, Mr. McCoy claims he inadvertently fired the gun causing a bullet to go through the back of the seat, striking Mr. Clay in his torso.

Mr. McCoy was arrested for involuntary manslaughter and booked into the Fresno County Jail on December 18th. Later in the day, he posted bond and was released with a court date of March 2nd.

This is the 23rd homicide investigation for our office in 2022. Nine of the 23 investigations originated in various city jurisdictions within Fresno County and our detectives took over the cases from police.
