TRAFFIC ADVISORY
UPDATE #5: One-way Traffic Control on State Route 140 Will Begin January 24

January 23, 2023 - MARIPOSA COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) continues to make progress clearing a rockslide that occurred on Sunday, January 15, 2023, temporarily closing State Route 140 near Briceburg in Mariposa County.

To date, more than 150 truckloads of material have been removed from the slide area on a key Sierra Nevada route that serves residents and businesses in the region, as well as visitors to Yosemite National Park.

Crews will continue working seven days a week during daylight hours to remove the slide, stabilize the slope, and repair the road.

Caltrans will enact one-way traffic control through the slide area from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., beginning Tuesday, January 24, and will continue that schedule daily until both lanes of Route 140 are fully reopened. There is no limit to vehicle type. Motorists are advised to expect delays.

Route 140 will be closed in both directions between the Yosemite Bug Hostel in Midpines and Cedar Lodge in El Portal from approximately 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. nightly. During those hours, motorists will be turned around at the closure points.

There is no change to the mid-February estimate of when Route 140 will be fully reopened in both directions. Caltrans is working as safely and expeditiously as possible to reopen the highway sooner.

We thank our partners with the California Highway Patrol-Mariposa (CHP) for escorting motorists between Midpines and El Portal on Monday, January 23.

This work and the schedule are subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment, and/or materials and construction related issues.

Motorists also can access Yosemite National Park on State Route 120 or Route 41. For Yosemite National Park operations information, contact Scott Gediman, Chief of Media Relations for Yosemite National Park, at scott_gediman@nps.gov or 209-742-3519.
