Local Groups Host “Merchants of Doubt”
A Documentary Film about Climate Change Denial

Around the world today, we see temperature and severe-storm records being broken; sea level rise inundating coastal areas and ocean islands; increasingly intense and longer lasting droughts and precipitation events; plants blooming earlier and the ranges of plants and animals moving toward the poles; increasing rates of species extinctions; and, polar ice caps and continental glaciers melting at record rates. What’s going on?

On the one hand, scientists studying climate tell us that these changes are compatible with their findings that Earth’s climate has been changing at an increasingly rapid rate as a result of human activities over the past two hundred years, primarily from the burning of fossil fuels, which releases carbon dioxide and other “greenhouse gases”. On the other hand, some press reports and certain politicians and organizations telling us that climate has always changed, what we’re seeing is caused by natural cycles, not human activities, and there is nothing to worry about. Who to believe?

This 90-minute documentary “Merchants of Doubt” explores this question, exposing a concerted strategy to create doubt about the facts of climate change through the use of pundits-for-hire who present themselves as scientific authorities. Based on the book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway, the film interviews industry representatives, global warming deniers, environmentalists, and climate scientists to create a riveting behind-the-scenes look at how the fossil fuel industry has been so successful in creating doubt and blocking action on climate.

Mariposa Pax Christi, the Mariposa United Methodist Church, the Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of Mariposa County, the UC Merced Climate Communication Center, and the Yosemite Area Audubon Society have teamed up to present a local screening of “Merchants of Doubt”, to be held in the Mariposa United Methodist Church sanctuary (corner of 6th and Bullion Streets) on Saturday, October 17, 2015. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m.; the film will begin promptly at 3:00 p.m. The showing will be followed by a time for questions and answers and discussion, finishing by 5:00 p.m.
