April 28, 2024 - Last Thursday, FBI New Orleans arrested a Buras man without incident on misdemeanor charges related to his conduct during the breach of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. His actions and the actions of others disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress convened to ascertain and count the electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election.

Matthew Matulich, 34, of Buras, Louisiana, is charged in a criminal complaint filed in the District of Columbia with the following misdemeanor offenses: theft of government property, knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted buildings or grounds without lawful authority, disorderly conduct in a restricted building or grounds, entering or remaining in the gallery of either house of Congress, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building, and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building.

Matulich was arrested in Venice, Louisiana, and will make his initial appearance in the Eastern District of Louisiana.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section are prosecuting this case. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana provided valuable assistance.

The FBI’s New Orleans and Washington Field Offices are investigating this case. The U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department provided valuable assistance.
