SFCS img 0122December 7-11 was Computer Science Week nationwide. At Sierra Foothill Charter School, every week is computer science week.

Under the instruction of educator David Newberry, students at SFCS have been exploring how computers and robots work. From Kindergarten through 8th grade, students have been learning how to program.

For the younger students, a full-body "dancing robot" activity introduced the concepts of putting together a particular sequence of actions, and acting them out -- like robots that assemble cars.

The older students began writing code almost from the first day of weekly rotations in a programming language called Logo. Students enter commands that instruct the computer to draw different shapes and patterns. Through working with Logo, students begin to get a feel for programming – both the pitfalls and possibilities.

In December, Mr. Newberry switched from Logo to HTML as the main focus of study. HTML is the language that webpages are written in. As well as being practical and kind of neat (it's easy to show off a webpage you've made), once older students have a working knowledge of HTML, they can begin to learn about more sophisticated behaviors that can be coded into websites.

Mr. Newberry plans to move on soon to JavaScript, which is a powerful programming language that runs inside web pages. Many web applications (such as Google Maps) are written in JavaScript. The study of JavaScript will continue through the end of the year.

Sierra Foothill Charter School is a free, non-profit, K-8 public school. Space is currently available in Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and grades 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, and the home school program.
