Moccasin Creek Hatchery
One of California's Fish Hatcheries is located at the intersection of highways 120 and 49. Moccasin Creek Hatchery is a trout hatchery in the Mother Lode foothill region of the western Sierra Nevada range. Don Pedro Reservoir is minutes away, as well as the Red Hills Interpretive Trail. Yosemite National Park is about 1 hour east of this visitor-friendly fish hatchery.

August 5, 2016 - The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) will stock approximately 10,000 pounds of fish in two Merced County waters this week. The catchable sized rainbow trout are coming from the Mojave Fish Hatchery in Victorville.

“This is an unexpected windfall for Merced area anglers,” said Greg Kollenborn, CDFW Senior Hatchery Supervisor. “The additional fish will be a nice addition to summer fishing here.”

The fish will be planted in Lake McSwain and in the Merced River just downstream from Lake McSwain.

CDFW raises and plants millions of rainbow trout from the 21 hatcheries around the state for the angling public.

These fish are in addition to regularly scheduled plants that CDFW does in the fall and winter. Extreme temperatures in the Central Valley usually preclude summer plants so CDFW encourages local anglers to take advantage of this unique opportunity.

Anglers are reminded that a valid California fishing license is required for everyone over 16 and each angler is allowed to catch five of these fish per day with a total of five in possession.
