February 17, 2017 - MERCED – Due to forecasted storm events and a high capacity of water in Lake McClure, increased predicted flows are expected to be seen on the Merced River beginning the evening of February 16.

merced county logoThose flows will reach up to 7,000 cubic feet per second.

That flow rate has not been seen since the last severe wet year in 1997.

The water releases come under the direction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

While the reservoir is owned by Merced Irrigation District, the Army Corps of Engineers dictates flood-management activities.

The increased water releases are intended to provide additional space for storm water in Lake McClure, which is currently in excess of 90 percent of its total capacity.

As has been stated before, residents are urged to remain well clear of the Merced River or any other waterway affected by recent storms.
