Topic: Lessons Learned from the Internment of Japanese Americans during World War ll
April 24, 2017 - The National Park Service, Yosemite Hospitality and the San Joaquin Valley Chapter of the Federal Bar Association will sponsor the fifth annual Law Day Yosemite commemoration Friday, April 28th at Half Dome Village (formerly Curry Village) in Yosemite Valley. The program runs from 10 a.m. to noon and is open to the public.
This year Law Day Yosemite focuses on a time when constitutional principles were set aside in the interest of national security: In 1942, in response to fears raised by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt issued executive orders for the forcible relocation of some 110,000 Japanese, most of them United States citizens, from the West Coast to internment camps in remote areas of California, Idaho, Arizona and beyond.
Law Day Yosemite 2017 is privileged to have Senior Judge A. Wallace Tashima of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the Reverend Sabado Masada and his wife, Marion Masada, of Fresno, speak on this topic. All three were interned as children. Senior Judge Anthony Ishii, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of California, will moderate a Q & A session.
Attendees will include eighth graders from elementary schools at the gateways to Yosemite, students from Sacramento’s Florin High School Law Academy, 70 home-schooled students and teachers form the Sacramento area, and inner city youth from Fresno and from East Palo Alto. Approximately 400 are expected to attend.
The commemoration will begin with music from the award-winning Mariposa High School Marching Band and introduction of attending state and federal judge’s and other dignitaries. The National Park Service Mounted Ranger Horse Patrol will present the colors, followed by a solo rendition of the National Anthem by Lauren Boone and Yosemite first graders leading all in the Pledge of Allegiance. Eighth grade essay contest winners will be recognized, applauded and awarded with Apple product prizes.
