Update: Homicide in Spring Valley
February 21, 2025 – San Diego County Sheriff's Office officials report that on February 19, 2025, deputies and the San
Miguel Fire Department responded to a report of a battery at a residence on Sacramento Ave. in Spring Valley. Upon arrival, they found a newborn male infant unconscious on the living room floor with visible head trauma. Sadly, the baby was pronounced dead at the scene. The biological father, 22-year-old David Ruiz, has been arrested for the murder of his newborn son.
On February 20, 2025, the Medical Examiner's Office conducted the autopsy and concluded that the preliminary cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head, categorizing the manner of death as homicide. The victim was identified as a six-day old baby boy.
The Sheriff's Homicide Unit has assumed responsibility for the investigation. At this stage of the investigation, the motivation and circumstances surrounding this tragic homicide are still unclear. Sheriff's Homicide investigators are working to gather more information to determine the facts of the case.
