June 2, 2025 - SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom and Acting Governor Eleni Kounalakis issued the following statement regarding the death of Baldwin Park Police Department Officer Samuel Riveros:

“We mourn the tragic loss of one of California’s brave law enforcement officers, who was killed in the line of duty while selflessly protecting the community. Our deepest condolences go out to Officer Riveros’ family, loved ones, and colleagues. We share in their grief and honor his sacrifice made in service to the public’s safety.”

On May 31, 2025, Officer Riveros was among the officers who were immediately met with gunfire after answering a call at a residence, resulting in fatal injuries to Officer Riveros.

Officer Riveros, 35, began his career with the Baldwin Park Police Department in 2016.

He is survived by his mother and sister.

In honor of Officer Riveros, flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff.

June 1, 2025 – Baldwin Park Police Department officials issue a statement from Chief Robert A. Lopez on behalf of the men and women of the Baldwin Police Department.

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Baldwin Park Police Department announces the tragic death of Officer Samuel “Sam” Riveros, who made the ultimate sacrifice while Baldwin Park Officer Samuel Riveros 350protecting our community.

Yesterday, Officer Samuel Riveros, Officer Anthony Pimentel, members of our Department, and assisting law enforcement agencies, responded to an extremely dangerous situation. They acted with the bravery and professionalism that define the finest in law enforcement. In that moment, Officer Samuel Riveros made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the lives of others and the community in which he served. Officer Anthony Pimentel, also in the face of danger, was injured and released from the hospital early this morning.

Today, we mourn a courageous officer, a respected colleague, and a beloved friend. Officer Samuel Riveros began his service with us as a Public Safety Trainee on April 3, 2016, and was sworn in as a Police Officer on September 11, 2016. His commitment to excellence led to his selection for the SWAT Team on July 1, 2019, where he served with honor for over five years. Most recently, he was appointed as a Field Training Officer on July 21, 2024, a testament to his leadership and mentorship.

A proud UC Irvine graduate, Officer Samuel Riveros was known not only for his tactical skills and professionalism, but for his love of snowboarding and his unwavering loyalty to the Los Angeles Dodgers. His legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the example he set.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Riveros family, his loved ones, and all who had the honor of serving alongside him.

At this time the Riveros family has asked for privacy during this tragic time.
